Australia Day Honour for AAD Manager

Media Release - 27 January 2006

Australian Association of the Deaf Manager Karen Lloyd has been awarded Membership of the Order of Australia (AM) in this year's Australia Day honours.

Karen Lloyd, AMThe award is for service to people who are deaf or hard of hearing as an advocate for improved services, funding and research, education and personal development programs.

Karen first became involved with Deaf community organisations in 1982 when she joined the (now disbanded) Concerned Deaf Group, which lobbied for better education for Deaf people. She has served as a volunteer on the boards and management committees of many community organisations since then. She has been involved with AAD in various roles since 1989.

"AAD is proud of this recognition for Karen and her contributions to the Deaf community," said AAD President Kyle Miers.

"The past 20 years has been an exciting time to be involved in Deaf community organisations," Karen said. “There have been many positive changes and improvements for Deaf people and it has been a privilege to be involved in helping to make these changes happen. There is still a lot more work to do so I'm sure I'll be around for a while yet."

This year AAD is celebrating its 20th anniversary so it is especially welcome for someone so closely connected with AAD to receive this award at this time.
