Community Consultations

Supply and Demand for Auslan Interpreting: the Deaf Perspective

AAD wants to find out what Deaf people think about the interpreting servicess they receive. We have written a discussion paper and questionnaire.

This is a very important questionnaire. It is your opportunity to tell us what is good about interpreting services, what is not good, and what you think needs to be done to make it better. We will then write a document for the Australian Government, based on what you tell us.

To help Deaf people understand the discussion paper and questionnaire, AAD will be holding community consultation meetings around the country in late February and early March 2007.

Help AAD raise some funds and enjoy delicious wines while you do it! It's easy!

Dogz Wine, a wine label company, is working with AAD to raise funds. And you can help fundraise and enjoy drinking delicious wine too! How?

  1. For every Dogz Wine bottle you purchase, 50 cents goes to the fundraising pool. You can buy your wines from: Duncan’s, Cellarbrations, IGA, Foodworks and Inn-keeper bottleshops.
  2. Nominate AAD as the preferred charity by voting on www.dogzwine.com.au/charity.php. Click on the button beside the AAD logo, enter your email address, and click on "submit".

You can do this once a week - whether you have bought wine or not! Yes, it's that easy! Thank you! Your support will help AAD in our efforts to improve the quality of life for all Deaf people.

What is Auslan?

Auslan IS the language used by the Deaf community of Australia.

AuslanAuslan is abbreviated as Australian Sign Language. It is the uniquely visual language widely used in the Australian Deaf community.

Auslan conveys meaning through the use of handshapes, movement and location in space in conjunction with facial expressions and the use of fingerspelling.

It has its own vocabulary and grammar and does not correspond to English - spoken or signed. Read more about Auslan.
